Aims and contents of the course:
We discuss recent work on the interaction of prosody, syntax, morphology
and semantics with pragmatic categories such as 'focus', 'topic',
'background', 'contrast' and 'givenness'. Depending on participants'
background and interests, any one of the theoretical aspects (prosody,
syntax, morphology, semantics) can be emphasized in the course of the
class. Likewise, the choice of languages discussed can be amended
according to participants' background, though English will play a major
part.
Assessment: Class participation, presentations, reading
Minimum requirements: Regular active participation, presentation
