The course provides a general introduction to statistical methodologies in the life sciences. The main goal is to understand the intuition behind statistical techniques, which is essential for carrying out a meaningful data analysis.

In scope:

  • How to use the R statistical programming language and its plotting tools
  • Foundations of probability theory, distributions
  • Theory of hypothesis testing + practically important tests
  • Linear modelling: ANOVA, linear regression, generalized linear models
  • Nonlinear regression
  • Bayesian analysis

Out of scope:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Hands-on analysis of participants' data sets
  • Advice on projects
