This course is primarily on political philosophy, but it will also touch on several key issues in political economy. The course focuses on individuals’ freedom and autonomy, and to what extent these values restrict how the state can permissibly act, especially to promote social welfare. We will consider the value of freedom and autonomy, and the possible problems of paternalism and nudging. We also go into practical issues, like drug legalisation and organ conscription.
